Milwaukee — July 11, 2013 — Johnson Controls, a global leader in delivering solutions that increase energy efficiency in buildings, cut annual utility costs by $105,000 at ManpowerGroup’s six-year-old LEED-gold headquarters. The project paid for itself in 12 months by adjusting the building equipment and its operations to meet current conditions, a process called retro-commissioning.
“There is a misconception that if you build a new, efficient building, it remains efficient for life,” said David Bishop, director, service operations & operations strategy, Johnson Controls. "Like a home or a car, buildings should be constantly fine-tuned to perform at their best."
The retro-commissioning process addresses changes that have developed throughout the building’s life. Using information collected from the Metasys® building management system, the Johnson Controls’ Service team identified 12 possible facility improvement measures at ManpowerGroup — four were chosen for their high potential to reduce energy and stimulate a fast payback. Upgrades included revising building system schedules to operate more efficiently, switching HVAC units from electric to natural gas, and centralizing the control of the air distribution system.
Once the savings were verified, ManpowerGroup received $25,000 from Focus on Energy, a Wisconsin-based organization funded by investor-owned energy utilities. The organization offers incentives to implement energy-efficiency projects.
“ManpowerGroup has a 65-year tradition of contributing to the communities we serve, and as part of that commitment, we support environmental programs to reduce waste and energy usage,” said Mara Swan, ManpowerGroup executive vice president, Global Strategy and Talent. “We are proud to partner with Johnson Controls to reduce our environmental impact through energy efficiency measures at our world headquarters building.”
Over the past 12 years, ManpowerGroup has worked with Johnson Controls’ Global WorkPlace Solutions business to design, construct and maintain all of its 750 field offices across North America. Global WorkPlace Solutions was hired to manage the design and construction of the new consolidated world headquarters that reduced office space by 27 percent, substantially boosted efficiency and created an improved work environment. Johnson Controls was awarded the facility management contract for the facility upon completion in 2007. The building was awarded with the USGBC’s LEED Gold certification in 2010.
ManpowerGroup has been recognized for its ongoing commitment to environmental initiatives. For the fifth consecutive year in 2013, the company was named to the FTSE4Good Index Series for meeting globally recognized corporate responsibility standards, including stringent environmental, social and governance criteria. ManpowerGroup was also named to Newsweek magazine’s 2012 Green Rankings for United States companies, ranking No.16 among 500 U.S. public companies and No.1 in the professional services category.
